Waterfalls in the Catlins

The Catlins are known for their natural beauty. These are Purakaunui Falls - a trademark of the Catlins. The south island has been wanting for rain this summer so supposedly they don't look their best here. We thought the falls looked pretty nice.

Here is Dan next to Matai Falls which are also in the Catlin area. What was amazing was how hot and rain-forest-like the walk to these was, but once you got to the falls it was as if someone turned on the air-conditioning. Very lush and cool. Bonus: no bugs or snakes!

Dan needed to dunk his hair into Horseshoe Falls which was just a 5 minute walk from Matai Falls. It was incredible; we barely saw other people on these trails and they are really so close to Dunedin and other cities. It made you feel as if you were really exploring.

This is a view looking back from the waterfalls. The forest was so lush & mossy; lots of ferns and big trees. This area is known for the beautiful native forests.
