The Catlins area is also home to Jacks Blowhole which is a large hole 55 meters deeps, 200 meters from the sea. During high tide, if the waves are high enough, water from the sea shoots out from it. To get there you must park here at Jacks Bay and walk through some farmer's pastures for about an hour. Note the high-tech signage.
Here's the pasture we walked through to get to the Blowhole. We had to hop fences via stiles which fortunately being the farm girl (or rather, having watched a lot of "All Creatures Great & Small" on PBS) I knew how to maneuver. The cows and sheep are all mixed together in pastures here. Of course, most of the cows in this pasture were not cows but bulls which after too many cold hard stares we took the hint and hopped the fence.
Right on the edge of the pasture (over the fence) are high cliffs and the sea. Apologies for the somewhat glamour shot look - it was really really windy.
This then is Jacks Blowhole - very very deep. It really doesn't look impressive here and honestly, we would have been much more impressed if the water was shooting up out of it, as it sometimes does. I guess the sea was calm or the tides were low. Anyway, it was a good walk, and one had to imagine how many sheep fell to their untimely deaths before fences were put up around this thing. There were all sorts of signs warning you not to lean over the fences or try to climb over to get a better look.
