Sunday, August 9th, we spent the day in Queenstown enjoying the perfect weather. It was clear and not too cold - I wish we had more days like this.
Dan got this picture of a wood pigeon from the balcony of our hotel Sunday morning. They're as big as small chickens and make whooshing noises with their wings when they fly.
A little coffee & watching the sun rise over the Remarkables - you can see the mountains reflection in the glass.
Dan & I took a ride up the gondola to catch the views over Queenstown. It was just a bit scary since people got stuck in these a month or so ago due to some malfunction. Mostly it was just amazing to see the scenery & the scrappy sheep that were eating on the mountain below us.
Another view of the gondola we came up on & that's a bungy platform sticking out into midair. No one was doing the bungy while we were there unfortunately.
Once we made it to the top, there is a building with a cafe & gift shop. But the really exciting part is the luge. We took the ancient-looking ski lift up to the top of the luge track.
Getting ready to start the race down the track. You are riding on a sled with wheels so you can turn and brake. And look really awesome in your red helmet.
Here's a picture of the track from the ski-lift and Lake Wakatipu below. The scenery was great & the luge was tons of fun. I could have done that all afternoon but we had to get back to Dunedin.
It must have been a perfect day for the paragliders - we saw so many of them. It looked so peaceful and fun...almost made me want to sign up.
On the way back to Dunedin, we stopped at a couple of Central Otago wineries that were along the way. This was the Chard Farm Winery - very scenic and very tasty wines to try.
Chard Farm Winery is directly across from the original bungy location - A J Hackett bungy. And no, neither of us has bungied before or plans to do it while here in NZ.
A lot of people watching from the bridge but I don't think anyone was jumping while we were there.
Just down the road was the sleek and modern Peregrine winery with their guard falcon watching over the barrels. From here is was back home to Dunedin. Another fun weekend in Queenstown - hopefully we'll get another one before we leave. Central Otago & Queenstown are really our favorites, I think. Something to do with all the sunshine and mountains.
