Saturday, August 1st, Dan & I drove up beyond Oamaru to try to find the Elephant Rocks area everyone told us about. Unfortunately, the maps in the car didn't list an Elephant Rocks area. We asked at a local dairy and they hadn't heard of the place. Thankfully there aren't a lot of options for roads around here so eventually we found the place.
The Elephant Rocks locality features strangely sculptured remains of Otekaike limestone. The limestone started out on the sea floor some 24 million years ago during the Oligocene Opoch. In recent geological times, probably within the last million years, the limestone was uplifted. Water and wind weathered the limestone into the current shapes. With imagination, some of the surfaces are reminiscent of elephants.
This was the film location for Aslan's camp in the Narnia movie.
Those are the snow-covered Southern Alps in the background. The day was a little cold and gray - it is still winter of course.
A nice guy took our picture. He was a local dad who brought a whole group of 8 year old girls there to play. We said we had trouble finding the place. He must have thought we were crazy but seriously, they don't put things on maps or put up signs around here.
Here's the one that looked most like an elephant to me. Well, sort of like an elephant.
Driving back we got to see some baby lambs! It really makes it feel like spring is coming seeing these guys running around.

And some baby calves. We're trying not to get too excited about Spring since we'll be moving back to Fall/Winter soon. But it's so fun to see the baby animals when we drive around.
