Sunday we visited Sandfly Bay on the eastern side of the Otago Peninsula (that’s the Pacific Ocean side). Sandfly Bay is pretty amazing – beautiful sandy beaches, towering sand dunes and heaps of Hooker’s sea lions.
The sand dunes are huge – we saw some kids sledding down them. As usual on the peninsula, the wind was brutal. Luckily we are learning and brought our rain jackets with us; we really just take them with us wherever we go now. Anyway, the walk to the beach was almost straight down a huge sand dune. It felt like going down a ski hill except with shoes instead of skis.
Once on the beach we noticed the sea lions. They seem to just collapse on the beach and sleep there. Sometimes one will raise its head and yawn showing off some sharp-looking teeth.
On the rocks at one end of the beach, fur seals were laying around. At first you can’t really see them since they blend in so well. Then you see one and suddenly you can see a whole bunch of them.
This one kept looking straight at us as if to say, "Don't come any closer." So we didn't; well, I didn't at least. Dan locked eyes with it for quite a while. It was like something from Seal Whisperer.
