Alexandra

This last Saturday we took the car & drove up the Clutha River to the Flat Top Hill Conservation Area near Alexandra. We took a walk around the lake formed by Butchers Dam (below) and saw hunters training their dogs by launching a dead pigeon across the lake. It was exciting.



That's me on Butchers Dam. They don't really let water across it. On the other side (where there is a lake now) used to be a small mining town. Supposedly you can still make out chimneys when the water is low.



This is an old mining blast shelter built into the rocks.

This is from close to the top of the Flat Top Hill. The area around here is mostly rocky and dry with tussocks of grass.

This last Saturday, we drove up to Alexandra (which is about 2.5 hours inland from Dunedin). The route follows the Clutha River and goes past many farms and orchards. Alexandra itself is a small town with some nice shops - we stopped for lunch. We found this neat sign that pretty much sums up how we feel as pedestrians in New Zealand.
