Fall in Otago

Isn't this picturesque? On our road trip this weekend to Alexandra, the road followed the Clutha River and many scenes like this one: sheep pastures, yellow aspens, family orchards. The weather was crisp & sunny and reminded us of Fall in Colorado.

We've seen scenes of sheep grazing in a pasture hundreds of times while driving in Otago but it just doesn't get old. The sheep are just too cute.

We stopped for a short walk along the Clutha River. It is fairly deep and swift in this area.

Oops! Almost ran into a small herd of cows in the road. Many of the country roads are like this: one lane gravel with two-way traffic. The bridges are especially challenging - generally there is a sign to indicate which direction has the right-of-way. Sometimes you also are competing with a train (and yes, the train always has the right-of-way).

This historic bridge over the Clutha is from the gold-mining days. The boards looked all rotted & the whole thing moved when you walked, but at least the water below looked deep enough so you'd be okay if you fell.
