Saturday, Jan 24th, Dan and I headed out to our very first A and P show here in New Zealand. A and P stands for agricultural and pastoral for those like me who were unsure. It's like a country fair back in the States. This one was the Taieri A and P show which was held just over the hill from Dunedin. The weather was sunny & hot, 35C which is 95 degrees Fahrenheit; I think it might have been the warmest day we've had here. The show is a relatively small one since there aren't many big farms so close to Dunedin. It was a lot of fun seeing all the animals.
They had a sheep racing event. There was some controversy whether this was the first of such events or not. Basically, the sheep race on a course towards the food at the end. This one jumped the fence and decided she did not want to participate.
Here come the winners. As you can see, this is more than just a simple race track. The sheep have to jump several fences, hedges, ramps...none of which proved very difficult for the racers.
Number 5 won in case you are keeping score. They all have teddy bear jockeys tied to their backs as they run. Unfortunately it was over in about 2 minutes. Those are some fast sheep.
Also at the show were rides for the kids....like these scoopers. Little kids climbed up and were able to operate these. Of course, Dan was jealous and wanted to try to get up into one of them since they are really meant for landscaping projects. The line was pretty long though, and I'm not sure how the guys would have felt with Dan sitting on their laps.
What's an A and P show without the BMX bikers showing off their tricks?
These guys were pretty amazing on their bikes. Inspiring all the little kids in the audience to try something like this at home.
