Monday, Dec 29th, after spending all that time in the water at Abel Tasman National Park, we wanted to do some hiking. Nelson Lakes National Park is about 1 hour south of Nelson in the northernmost part of the Southern Alps. The park has two major lakes - Lakes Rotoiti and Rotoroa. The vegetation is mainly beech forests with alpine plants above the tree line.
We took a 4 hour loop hike up Mount Robert and had incredible views of the surrounding area.
Marly and me on the way up to the summit. Below us is Lake Rotoiti. The weather was incredible - another hot, sunny day. Actually, too sunny -- I got major sunburn despite wearing extra strength sunscreen.
The hike was great - incredible views of the Southern Alps and lots of birds and little alpine flowers. Too bad we didn't have more time in the Nelson Lakes area. There are lots of interesting looking hikes and multi day tramps in the park. Our plans were to head to the West Coast which was still a few hours drive away.
