Dec 24th & 25th we spent relaxing in Bests Island, a tiny island accessible by road near Nelson. Nelson is on the northern part of the South island and is the sunniest town in NZ. We had a good time doing nothing for a couple days. We visited a few beaches and wanted to post pictures of ourselves laying out in bikinis and such, but it was really sort of cold. It was fun and relaxing but didn't really feel like Christmas the way we are used to it.
This is at the beach on Rabbit Island which is right next to Bests Island. Not sure why it's called Rabbit Island, but it was crazy crowded with people on holiday. Christmas here in New Zealand is almost like Memorial Day in the States -- everyone goes camping or cooks out with family. It's the first big holiday of the summer.
This beach was huge and would have been really great to hang out at if the weather had been a little nicer. We were also still tired from the kayaking the day before -- so we went back and watched some movies and ate chocolates at the apartment we were staying at.
We took a walk around Bests Island which took about 30 minutes or so. The area was very quiet and felt isolated. We had fun looking for shells and things at the beach.
The sunset was beautiful over the water. We even saw our first hedgehog crossing the road this evening. It reminded me of Beatrice Potter books.
Not sure how safe it is to have electrical poles in the ocean but it made an interesting picture of the sunset. So Christmas in New Zealand: quite different for us, didn't really feel like Christmas actually much at all, but it was very good to have my sister, Marlene, with us to celebrate. Hope everyone back home had a very merry Christmas this year, and we look forward to celebrating Christmas next year closer to home.
