After our hike around Hooker Valley we drove about 5 km to the terminal lake of the Tasman Glacier. The Tasman Glacier is the largest of New Zealand's glaciers. We thought we could kayak on this lake near the Tasman Glacier but supposedly that is not allowed although I'm not sure why not.
The terminal lake at the end of the Tasman Glacier was easy to hike to - just 20 minutes or so. Which was good since it was pretty late already (maybe 8pm?), and the sun goes down around 9:30 now. The roads are the typical gravel one-lane-on-the-mountainside type. Anyway, the lake was full of larger icebergs like the one above. The ice was incredible - see how it looks blue in parts?
From the look-out over the lake you can see all the ice chunks all at one end of the lake. It was very windy so maybe they all were pushed over there from the wind. We were the only ones at the lake; the whole area seems so remote.
