On Saturday November 29th, we traveled to Mount Cook village which is about 4 hours drive from Dunedin in the center of the South Island. Mount Cook is the highest mountain in New Zealand at just over 12,000 feet and is surrounded by a beautiful national park.
On the hike we took in the national park, we saw this pair of Paradise ducks. I think they are only found in New Zealand. You always see them in pairs like this - the male has the glossy black-green head, and the female has the white head.
It was a beautiful day - very sunny and warm but also very windy. So windy that the kayak trip we had planned was postponed until Sunday. We took a hike instead from Mount Cook village towards Mount Cook through Hooker Valley, crossing two swing bridges over Hooker River and ending at the terminal lake of the Hooker Glacier. The swing bridges were pretty scary with the strong winds almost blowing our hats off.

The area was really beautiful. Several glacier lakes and rivers to admire. It was great to be in the mountains - very awe-inspiring.
