We took these photos on our hike from Mount Cook Village to the Hooker Glacier terminal lake near Mount Cook. That's Mount Cook in the background of this picture. Sir Edmund Hillary "practiced" on this peak before his successful ascent of Everest.
The hike followed the Hooker River and was fairly easy. There were a lot of people out enjoying the weather and incredible scenery.
We saw a lot of these beautiful alpine flowers in the area. Remember it's springtime here.
Here we are at the terminal lake of the Hooker Glacier. The glacier is at the far side of the lake - it's hard to see since it's covered with gravel, but you can just make out the ice face in this picture.
You can see the glacier a little better in this photo. The lake water itself is cloudy white from all the
sediments in the water. Small chunks of ice that have broken off were floating around in the water like little
icebergs.
Here's the first swing bridge that we crossed. With the strong wind, it was really swinging, but we all made it back safely. The weekend was a great way to celebrate Thanksgiving since no one did anything on Thursday - it's just a normal day here, of course. And you can't find cranberries or pumpkin in the stores; we found a frozen turkey at the grocery but it was for $90. So we spent our mini-break weekend at Mount Cook feeling thankful instead.
