Whitehaven beach on Whitsunday Island is famous for its pure white silica sand. We took a day cruise out to see the island and were able to spend some time on the beach. It was a hazy day when we were there so the pictures don't look very spectacular. Laying on the beach was nice. The sand really is perfect - clean, white & super fine. Unfortunately, it was very windy & the nice sand really stung when it was blowing at you.
From another Whitsunday Island viewpoint, you can look back at Whitehaven beach and Hill Inlet. We wanted to go on a different trip where you go up Hill Inlet in smaller boats, but there were no spots for us left. It's hard to tell from the pictures, but Hill Inlet is made up of sand bars and beaches and a meandering inlet that almost cuts the island in half.
Just imagine it without the haziness.
Walking back from the lookout point on Whitsunday Island, we heard something in the bush and saw a goanna (a monitor lizard). It was really big! We've never seen one outside a zoo, and honestly, I hope we don't run into any more. They look tough. Our tour guide reassured us by saying that animals that are smaller than you won't kill you, but I can think of many things smaller than me that can kill me. Like the Sydney funnel-web spider. Which we fortunately did not see. While on the cruise back to Airlie beach, Dan was allowed to steer the boat, and we saw a lot of sea turtles in the water.
