Monday, Sept 28th we arrive in Sydney for Dan's physio conference. Annoyingly, I was still very sick. At least our hotel was flash, and some friends from Dunedin were there for the conference so we could hang out.
On Tuesday, Lexie gave us the walking tour of the highlights of Sydney. World traveler that she is, she has been to Sydney several times before and knows where the good spots are. Unfortunately, this breakfast place wasn't one of them. We were finishing breakfast outside, and seagulls started to hover around us. One kept limping closer and closer to the table. Then another swoped down, and Dan jumped up to swat it. Suddenly, the limp one snatched the rest of Dan's croissant, Lexie and I jumped up while a dozen seagulls attacked the table. It was very Hitchcock. The girl behind the counter said it happened everyday. You'd think they would warn you before you lose your breakfast to the birds.
We took a walk through Sydney's Botanical Gardens which are really lovely. This bird is called a Laughing Kookaburra but wasn't actually laughing when we saw him. More like protecting the nest.
We saw these large Cockatoos all over the parks in the city. They look so cool with their neon yellow mohawks, or would that be a mullet?
With the iconic Sydney Opera House and Bridge as background, even these guys look good.
I'm not sure what Dan is going for here.
If you look closely at the bottom left of this photo you can see a giant eel that was in a duck pond at the Botanical Gardens . The signs said they occasionally would gulp a duckling but then duck would eat baby eels. Ah, nature.
Sydney Opera House - we were supposed to take the tour but never got around to it. The weather was so sunny and warm, it seemed a waste to spend it being inside.
Opera House detail. The roof seems to be covered in diamond-shaped tiles...they'd probably tell you more detail on the tour we didn't take.
Continuing the tour, this is looking across the harbor to Luna Park, a historical amusement park. That clown face almost looks menacing.
We spent some time in the Rocks area. It's a very old section with original buildings filled with shops and restaurants and artist galleries. Lexie and I are walking past this very interesting sculpture of pioneers.
Having a drink at what is supposedly Sydney's oldest pub even though this isn't its original location? Yeah, that didn't make sense to me either.
The Rocks area had many of these interesting little lanes and walkways. This one is called Nurses Lane; there was a hospital originally in the area.
This is looking across Darling Harbor - we walked on this pedestrian bridge most every day.
