From Thursday, Sept 24th until Monday, Sept 28th, we stayed in Airlie Beach and visited the Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef.
We seemed to have bad timing during this holiday. As we headed north, so did the dust storm so that everything was hazy the entire time we were in the Whitsunday area. The area is known for its picture-postcard views. It mostly looked like the picture above while we were there. By this time, I was feeling miserable with my cold/flu/bronchitis thing but managed to self-medicate and go along for the Great Barrier Reef cruise even though I probably should have stayed in bed.
We took some pictures of the coral out at the reef, but I don't think they really capture how it looked. The cruise is about 2 and 1/2 hours to get to the pontoon near the reef where you are allowed to snorkel or dive. They also had a semi-submersible boat so that people who didn't want to dive (like me) could get some good views of the coral.
We saw some fish, including some that looked like Nemo but weren't able to catch them with the camera.
Dan took his first introductory dive at the reef and seemed to have a lot of fun doing it. They actually hold your hand during the dive.
This group was really good and helped new divers. We went on another cruise where they basically just pushed you off the side of the boat. Needless to say, Dan didn't dive with those guys.
This is the pontoon where we spent a lot of time snorkeling and checking out the reef. It's like a water park with the water slide and all.
Well, this photo is in the wrong place. We didn't captain the Reef cruise ship but the other cruise that we took. Dan asked if he could steer for a while, and the captain said sure. No crashes or birdstrikes to report.
