Thursday, April 23rd, we started driving from Fiordland and Te Anau towards Bluff on the Southern Scenic Route. This part of the trip sounds longer and more exciting than it is. Once we got to the ocean the views got pretty amazing. We eventually made it to Bluff which is basically the southernmost city on the South Island. We tried the world-famous Bluff oysters...yeah, probably going to save our money for something else. Not huge oyster fans...just too slimy.
This is Monkey Island. Have no idea why it is named that - obviously no monkeys around here. One of the many mysteries along the Southern Scenic Route.
We took an unbelievably long gravel-road detour to see some of these huge, ancient trees. This one was 8.31 meters around and over 1000 years old.
From the southern coast of the South Island, you can see Stewart Island where we went hiking on a previous adventure. In the picture above, Stewart Island looks like faint blue mountains on the horizon. Stewart Island is actually the most southern island of New Zealand - it would have been great go there with Fernando, but unfortunately we were running out of time.
