Wednesday, April 22nd (happy birthday, Mom!) we headed out to Milford Sound on the incredible Milford road. It's a very scenic two hour drive with iconic landscapes like the one above. Sheep, mountains, gorgeous light -- very New Zealand.
Milford Sound is simply stunning. It is a natural wonder of world fame. Nowhere else in Fiordland do the mountains stand as tall, straight out of the sea. In the foreground of the fiord stands the legendary Mitre Peak, a remarkable presence dominating the skyline -- and posing very well for photos.
This was the boat we were on for our wilderness cruise with Mitre Peak in the background.
The weather was pretty perfect again for our Milford Sound wilderness cruise. Even warmer than Doubtful Sound. This cruise was much more relaxed than the previous day with a lot less people. We spent a lot of time just sitting at the front of the boat admiring the views.
Views like this of a waterfall coming down from a hanging valley.
Dan got to help pull up the sail. We had a million more pictures of Milford Sound but I think you get the idea. It was gorgeous and very relaxing just taking in all the views. No wildlife other than some fur seals. Milford Sound has more boat traffic than Doubtful so you are less likely to see wildlife. I think it was good to change the plans and include Milford Sound in Fernando's NZ vacation. It's a famous area and would have been a shame to miss. Also, I didn't feel like doing another long hike.
And the drive on Milford road as always, was amazing. The road itself has arrows on it (you can sort of see in the picture) to remind tourists what side of the road to drive on.
