Lake Wanaka

Before we left Wanaka on Sunday, we took a little walk around the lake. It was cold and bright, and the water was so still.

Wait, that water level looks pretty low.

Dan is concerned about the low lake levels like a true Kiwi. New Zealand gets something like 70% of its electricity from hydro power. Lately the electric company has been running ads on television encouraging everyone to eat by candlelight or whatever to save power, threatening rolling blackouts due to low lake levels. Just what you want to hear in winter. New Zealand does have coal/oil but sells it to China so we can still be clean, green NZ.

We may be cold & eat in the dark, but look how pretty it all is.*

* okay, so we are actually semi-toasty with the sweaters and the heater & do actually use the lights just so you don't all freak out thinking we are impoverished & on the brink of pneumonia.
