This weekend in honor of our anniversary & Dan’s birthday, we had a mini-holiday in Wanaka. Wanaka is a resort town near Queenstown in the Lakes District of Central Otago – it’s about 3 hours drive from Dunedin. It's on the southern end of Lake Wanaka and is surrounded by snow-capped mountains.
And it was chilly! We arrived Friday afternoon and took a little walk around part of the lake. Dan was saying it wasn't that cold since he's trying to toughen up like a true Southern man (men of the south part of the South Island are supposedly really tough); then a gale force wind almost blew us over with sleet & snow. We ran back to the shelter of the shops where he bought himself a sweater -- my tough Southern man.
We woke up Saturday morning to snow! Dan was sporting his new green merino sweater on his first snowy birthday. This was just outside the B&B we were staying at in Wanaka. There is a pretty creek in the backyard, & the house was so quiet since we had the whole place to ourselves. The ski/winter season had just started in Wanaka; of course their ski season is only 2 months so we have to get busy if we want to participate.
