This last Saturday Danny & I took a tour of the Otago Peninsula to see the wildlife. We went to the Yellow-Eyed Penguin reserve and saw some of the elusive penguins. They are pretty big and actually like to live away from other penguins in wooded areas.
These are the nesting sites the people make to encourage the penguin community. Right now is moulting season so all the penguins have to stay on land for 4 weeks. They are getting new feathers which aren't yet waterproof so they cannot go into the water to fish. Basically they lay around for four weeks so they don't use up energy. This one looks like he came home after a rough night.
This is the lighthouse at the edge of the peninsula. Around it is the Royal Albatross colony. You can see one in this picture. They have a wingspan of up to 3 meters. We were able to see 3 of them flying around and a few other chicks that were in nests on the clifts. They spend most of their lives out at sea so they are not seen much.
This is under the lighthouse and these rocks were covered in fur seals. It was hard to get pictures of them since they blend into the rocks so well.
This is just another picture of the lighthouse and peninsula. The tour was really nice; most of it was on a boat which was a bit rocky and cold but we got to see everything you normally cannot see from the road.
