Saturday, March 1st, we went to the Catlins again to see some things we missed the previous trip. McLean Falls was our first stop. Everyone talks about Purakaunui Falls in the Catlins which we visited last week & were impressed. No one mentions McLean Falls. We just followed the map to basically anywhere with "waterfall" in the name. We thought this area where we were standing was the main attraction. Then we noticed the trail kept going so we followed it.
This is actually the main part of McLean Falls. I'm not sure why it isn't mentioned more in the guidebooks. These were the most impressive falls we have seen so far. Dan, of course, needed to climb the mossy, wet rocks to get as close as possible.
Here is as close as we could get without getting really wet. The area around the falls is a rain forest or native bush with hardwoods and ferns, and every surface is covered with bright green moss. It is just so wet and green and lush in the Catlins. It's also fairly cold considering it's summer still. Most of this day it was also raining but not a huge amount, just light, constant rain.
