Deer Park Heights

While visiting the Deer Park Heights, we saw the Himalayan thar - a large, goat-like animal. It was introduced to NZ around 1900 to provide game for hunters. Of course, they got out of hand and now are all over the alpine areas here eating the delicate plants.

They are impressive looking though with their mane-like hair and big horns.

At the top of Deer Park Heights, one deer was pretty friendly with Dan. He came right up and started eating from his hand. They are so used to visitors here.

Then he started eating straight from the bucket and almost tipped it over.

Below us in this picture you can see Queenstown itself. It's a trendy town full of million dollar vacation homes, nice restaurants and pricey shops.

We got to see a small herd of Highland cattle with their shaggy coats and long horns. They advised you to stay in your cars around them so no hand-feeding.
