This last Friday, June 5th, our friends Craig and Katie asked if we wanted to join them for a weekend in Christchurch to go on a winery tour. Eager at the chance to leave town especially as snow was forecast, we hopped in the car and drove the 5 hours to Christchurch. I'm not sure why we have to live so far from civilization here. Just kidding, Dunedin's great.
Saturday we took the wine tour with several Australians and a German winemaker all on holiday in Canterbury. The bus driver was a very nice guy who used to live in Dunedin. We stopped at four wineries, the last being Mud House which was very posh. Dan posing by the fireplace - all he needs is a pipe.
Being almost winter, the wines have all been picked and now sheep wander amongst the vines.
The day started sunny and cold but turned overcast with just a few snowflakes in the air.
We had lunch at Waipara Springs winery which was very tasty.
The barrels at Waipara Springs were stamped with a weka - one of the flightless birds of NZ. Unfortunately we had to skip several good wineries usually on the tour - they were closed for repairs or something like that. The ones we did go to were tasty, and the tour was lots of fun.
