Saturday, June 20th, we celebrated the longest night of the year with the Dunedin Midwinter Carnival.
There was a procession of lanterns and dancers around the Octagon.
This year's theme was "a winter garden" and the flower lanterns were amazing.
They are made from tissue paper with candles to light them. The smaller ones were carried by little children which was cute.
The Octagon was pretty crowded for the parade which walked around twice so everyone could get a good view.
The big flowers were amazing - each had about 5 candles. Thankfully, not a lot of wind last night.
This winter-princess lady was on stilts with big Christmas-lights wings and a crown...she almost got as many ooohs and ahhhs as the dragon that came by later.
The rest of the carnival consisted of this merry-go-round and a few food stalls. After the parade we watched the rugby -- the All Blacks beat France this week which caused just about as much cheering as when they lost last week. These quiet Kiwis...no wonder they think Americans are loud.
